All Law Society offices will be closed for the holiday period from midday Tuesday, 24 December 2024 until 8:30am on Monday, 6 January 2025.
The Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury libraries will not be staffed during the above period. Access is available 24/7 for lawyers with an access card throughout the holiday season.
If you need to contact a lawyer during this time, please use the Registry look up or Get Legal Help tool.
For urgent matters, you can contact us via 027 295 1730 and a member of staff will call you back if necessary. Otherwise, we will contact you when our offices reopen.
The Law Society cannot provide legal advice.
For other matters, please check below to see if the information is provided:

Unfortunately, the Law Society cannot provide contact details for lawyers other than those that are already publicly available. If your lawyer works for a firm, please call them. They may have an alternative lawyer available who can assist you. You could also use the Get Legal Help tool on our website to find an alternative lawyer if your matter is urgent. If you don’t know the name of the lawyer who may hold the will, you can place a will notice with the Law Society advertising that you are looking for the will.
You can do this via your local Law Society branch or our national e-newsletter which is issued once a week to all practising lawyers in New Zealand. The first edition of LawPoints in 2025 will be issued on Thursday, 16 January 2025.
Please use our online booking form if you wish to place a will notice. Find out more information about will notices.
If you have a media inquiry, please email media@lawsociety.org.nz. The media inbox will be monitored over the holiday period.
If you wish to make a complaint about a lawyer, please complete the complaints form and email it to complaints@lawsociety.org.nz. We will acknowledge receipt of your complaint when our office reopens.
If the problem may infect other devices, please temporarily disable the connection. Please note down everything that’s happened, including when and how you noticed the issue, what’s been affected, e.g. website or email accounts, and any other relevant details. You can use CERT NZ’s online reporting tool to help you identify and diagnose the problem and next steps to resolve it.
Cyber attacks often target people by getting them to click a link or download something that gives the attacker access into a network or system. Staff are often at the frontline of attacks on legal workplaces — for example, phishing campaigns where an attacker pretends to be a trusted entity.
Please read guidance on how to keep your business safe and secure at CERT NZ and Business.govt.nz.
Our best advice during this time is to contact the Legal Counselling Service which is run by Vitae and supported by the Law Society. Counsellors are available every hour of every day and you can receive up to six free sessions.
Make sure you mention you’re accessing the "Legal Community Counselling Service".
Yes, the mentoring programme runs 24/7 on a software platform and is open to all lawyers and people who are admitted but are not yet practising or are between roles and do not currently hold a practising certificate.
The programme is free to join, for more information email mentoring@lawsociety.org.nz.
