Understanding Financial statements from a commercial perspective

Kelsey Keller and Gaylene Findlay (BDO Taranaki)

Kelsey and Gaylene will introduce the two key financial statements (Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet) and discuss when you may need to use these, how you should read them and what you should be looking for.They will also give a brief overview of business structures and tax considerations for common transactions that you will come across in your day-to-day job working with clients in business.

Drug and alcohol - continuous monitoring devices

Dan Altvater (Drug and Alcohol Monitoring Systems LTD)

The presentation will cover commonly used “Continuous Drug Testing devices” that are being utilized in NZ Family Law, NZ Drug Courts and Oranga Tamariki. Learn about how the Drug Patch works and how Continuous Alcohol Monitoring is achieved using a wrist worn device. Dan will compare the detection windows of traditional Drug/Alcohol testing methods to continuous monitoring devices and review research on the deterrent factor worn devices have on client behaviour. There will also be some use cases of how the devices are being utilized by the courts in NZ.

Philip McCarthy will provide a summary of the key cases showcasing developments on topical issues in employment and health and safety law. Key areas of interest will include, restructuring, restraints of trade, the employer contractor divide, and volunteers.

Environment – Lauren Wallace (GQ)

There’s been a lot of change in the Resource Management space in recent years, with sweeping reform on the horizon. This presentation will highlight key changes and offer insights into how these reforms impact land use and development, the environment and compliance strategies.

Commercial – Scott Chamberlain (Connect Legal)

Scott will talk about some of the commercial and corporate activity that is occurring in Taranaki. He’ll talk about some recent transactions and what challenges and opportunities are presenting themselves in the commercial law space. Scott will discuss some ‘deal activity’ together with what he’s seeing in the business world in New Plymouth, including re-financing and re-structuring as businesses position themselves to tackle the economic challenges that have pushed businesses over the last few years.
