NZ Law Society guidance on compulsory client information disclosure

This article is over 3 years old. More recent information on this subject may exist.

The New Zealand Law Society has released a Practice Briefing on Compulsion of Client Information and Responding to a Search Warrant.

The briefing has been produced as the Law Society regularly receives inquiries from lawyers who are concerned about their obligations to disclose client information under compulsion from Police or other government agencies.

Its objective is to provide assistance to lawyers who are faced with the difficulties arising from a request or formal requirement to disclose client information.

It outlines issues which may need to be considered and practical steps to take. The information is not intended as a substitute for legal advice which may need to be sought.
