Buddle Findlay appoints three new senior associates

Buddle Findlay has announced the appointment of three new senior associates: Mace Gorringe, Andrew Suggate and Jacey McGrath.

L-R: Mace Gorringe, Andrew Suggate, and Jacey McGrath

Mace Gorringe joined the Auckland financial services team in July 2024. Mace is an experienced restructuring, insolvency and general finance lawyer. He is known for offering and implementing clear solutions to sometimes complex problems.

His career has covered the full spectrum of restructuring, insolvency and finance; working with insolvency practitioners, borrowers, lenders, companies (and their boards), purchasers, trustees and supervisors, governments and more. He also has significant experience with infrastructure, housing and private M&A. This broad background gives Mace particular insight into transformational moments for businesses and their funding and financing, especially with complicated capital structures.

Mace is a guest lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington and teaches project finance as part of Laws 391: Law of International Finance. He edits the Practical Law New Zealand practice note on intercreditor deeds and priority issues with Thomson Reuters. He has twice been published in the Journal of Banking and Finance Law and Practice.

Mace returned home to Auckland and joined Buddle Findlay from the Wellington office of another large law firm. He has also previously worked in various law firms in London and Auckland.

Andrew Suggate also joined the Auckland financial services team in July 2024. A financial services and capital markets expert, Andrew has more than 15 years’ experience advising financial institutions in New Zealand and overseas on all aspects of financial services and capital markets law, including investment structuring, financial product issuance and distribution, financial advice, and prudential, conduct and financial services regulatory law.

Andrew is recognised for supporting pragmatic and commercial outcomes for a full range of financial services businesses including banks, fund managers, non-bank deposit takers, financial advisers, insurers, NZX participants, platform providers and FinTechs.

Andrew joins Buddle Findlay from a major commercial bank, having previously worked in private practice at another New Zealand firm, as well as in-house at major financial institutions in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Andrew has twice been recognised as a 'Next Generation Lawyer' in the Asia Pacific Legal 500 legal directory and has been ranked 'Up and Coming' in the Chambers and Partners legal directory.

Jacey McGrath re-joined Buddle Findlay earlier this month in the Wellington commercial litigation and insolvency team. Jacey specialises in commercial litigation and insolvency. She has acted for private and public sector clients on a range of matters including contractual claims, debt recovery, negligence, lease disputes, breach of confidence, product liability and misrepresentations.

Jacey has experience in alternative dispute resolution, including mediation, and has appeared as counsel in the Privy Council, Court of Appeal, High Court and District Court.

Jacey also has prior experience in financial markets regulation, including the investigations of multiple failed finance companies, advising on potential legal breaches, and assisting in several prosecutions of directors.

Jacey returns to Buddle Findlay from the Ministry of Justice, where she held a senior legal specialist role at the Court of Appeal. This required her to exercise the quasi-judicial decision-making powers of the Registrar, issuing written determinations of complex applications relating to security for costs, fees, and time extensions. She also worked with judges to resolve jurisdictional and procedural issues arising in civil cases, and to draft amendments to the Court of Appeal (Civil) Rules 2005 to improve procedures and clarity for litigants.
