Statistics New Zealand has released an experimental proof of concept on dwelling stocks and how data can be used to estimate dwelling completions from building consents issued and other information.

The Experimental Dwelling Estimates information is covered by a number of caveats against using it in decision making.

The experimental data shows that in the year to 31 March 2017, 30,626 residential dwellings of all types were consented, and 27,862 dwellings were completed. The information and estimates is also available by local authority

Of residential dwellings which were consented in the 2016 calendar year, 2.3% were cancelled, 50.6% were in progress and 47.2% were completed.
