New Zealand Law Society - Supporting International Women’s Day

Supporting International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is on Saturday 8 March, and the Law Society is supporting the Ministry for Women’s efforts to help reduce New Zealand’s gender pay gap.

This year’s International Women's Day themes are "For ALL women and girls: Rights.Equality. Empowerment" and "Accelerate Action"

The gender pay gap in New Zealand has reduced steadily from 16.3% in 1998, but progress has slowed. It is currently 8.2% (as at 30 June 2024).

The Ministry for Women is seeking input from organisations around the country to fill in a survey about what steps they are taking to reduce the gender pay gap. The Law Society will be completing this survey when it is released later this month and encourages legal firms and organisations to do the same.

The Ministry for Women is also has a Gender Pay Gap Toolkit.  This is a great resource filled with practical tips and guidance for businesses of all sizes. The tool was developed with the assistance of several organisations including the Law Society with a focus on simplicity. The goal is to assist organisations to calculate their own gender pay gap and develop a strategy to close to gap.
