Gowns can be hired from the Auckland Library daily or for extended periods. We advise booking in advance using this form.
Gowns are available for hire at the Wellington Library. We recommend you book in advance to be sure one is available.
Two gowns are available at the Canterbury Library for hire to lawyers (court work only).
Candidates for admission and their moving counsel have the option of wearing traditional court attire (wigs, bands, white shirt and gowns) or gowns over neat clothing.
Neat clothing means dark/black suit, white collared shirt and tie for men and equivalent dress for women. Women should ensure their shirt or blouse is white, and wear black or skin tone stockings with a skirt. Where possible, hair should be tied back.
Applicants and counsel moving may not combine the two options by, for example, wearing a wig and a tie, or bands over a tie. There is no requirement to wear a wig.
See instructions from the Chief High Court Judge.
NZ wide: Wigs, gowns and bibs, for all ceremonial occasions, can be hired from Academic Dress Hire. Advance booking is essential. Although it is based in Auckland, it offers a country-wide service.
